The post Firefox will upgrade more Mixed Content in Version 127 appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
Starting with version 127, Firefox is going to automatically upgrade audio, video, and image subresources from HTTP to HTTPS.
When introducing the notion of “mixed content” a long while ago, browsers used to make a fairly sharp distinction between active and passive mixed content: Loading scripts or iframes over HTTP can be really detrimental to the whole document’s security and has long since been blocked as “active mixed content”. Images and other resources were otherwise called “passive” or “display” mixed content. If a network attacker could modify them, they would not gain full control over the document. So, in hope of supporting most existing content, passive content had been allowed to load insecurely, albeit with a warning in the address bar.
Previous behavior, without upgrading: Degraded lock icon, with a warning sign in the lower right corner.
With the web platform supporting many new and exciting forms of content (e.g., responsive images), that notion became a bit blurry: Responsive images are not active in a sense that a malicious responsive image can take over the whole web page. However, with an impetus toward a more secure web, since 2018, we require that new features are only available when using HTTPS.
Given these blurry lines between active and passive mixed content, the latest revision of the Mixed content standard distinguishes between blockable and upgradable content, where scripts, iframes, responsive images and really all other features are considered blockable. The formerly-called passive content types (
,
and
elements) are now being upgraded by the browser to use HTTPS and are not loaded if they are unavailable via HTTPS.
This also introduces a behavior change in our security indicators: Firefox will no longer make use of the tiny warning sign in the lower right corner of the lock icon:
After our change. A fully secure lock icon. The image load was successfully upgraded or failed (e.g., Connection Reset).
With Firefox 127, all mixed content will either be blocked or upgraded. Making sure that documents transferred with HTTPS remain fully secure and encrypted.
Enterprise users that do not want Firefox to perform an upgrade have the following options by changing the existing preferences:
security.mixed_content.upgrade_display_content
to false
, such that Firefox will continue displaying mixed content insecurely (including the degraded lock icon from the first picture).security.mixed_content.block_display_content
to true
, such that Firefox will block all mixed content (including upgradable).Reasons for changing these preferences might include legacy infrastructure that does not support a secure HTTPS experience. We want to note that neither of these options are recommended because with those, Firefox would deviate from an interoperable web platform. Furthermore, these preferences do not receive the amount of support, scrutiny and quality assurance as those available in our built-in settings page.
We will continue our mission where privacy and security is not optional, to bring yet more HTTPS to the web: Next up, we are going to default all addresses from the URL bar to prefer HTTPS, with a fallback to HTTP if the site does not load securely. This feature is already available in Firefox Nightly.
We are also working on another iteration that upgrades more page loads with a fallback called “HTTPS-First” that should be in Firefox Nightly soon. Lastly, security-conscious users with a higher desire to not expose any of their traffic to the network over HTTP can already make use of our strict HTTPS-Only Mode, which is available through Firefox settings. It requires all resource loads to happen over HTTPS or else be blocked.

Pwn2Own is an annual computer hacking contest where participants aim to find security vulnerabilities in major software such as browsers. Two weeks ago, this event took place in Vancouver, Canada, where participants investigated everything from Chrome, Firefox, and Safari to MS Word and even the code currently running on your car. Without getting into the technical details of the exploit here, this blog post will describe how Mozilla quickly responds to and ships updated builds for exploits found during Pwn2Own.
To give you a sense of scale, Firefox is a massive piece of software: 30 million+ lines of code, six platforms (Windows 32 & 64bit, GNU/Linux 32 & 64bit, Mac OS X and Android), 90 languages, plus installers, updaters, etc. Releasing such a beast involves coordination across many cross-functional teams spanning the entire globe.
The timing of the Pwn2Own event is known weeks beforehand, so Mozilla is always ready when it rolls around! The Firefox train release calendar takes into consideration the timing of Pwn2Own. We try not to ship a new version of Firefox to end users on the release channel on the same day as Pwn2Own to hopefully avoid multiple updates close together. This also means that we are prepared to ship a patched version of Firefox as soon as we know what vulnerabilities were discovered if any at all.
The specific exploit disclosed at Pwn2Own consisted of two bugs, a necessity when typical web content is rendered inside of a proverbial browser sandbox: These two sophisticated exploits took an admirable amount of effort to reveal and leverage. Nevertheless, as soon as it was discovered, Mozilla engineers got to work, shipping a new release within 21 hours! We certainly weren’t the only browser “pwned”, but we were the first of all, to patch our vulnerability. That’s right: before you knew about this exploit, we had already protected you from it.
As scary as this might sound, Sandbox Escapes, like many web browser exploits, are an issue common to all browsers, thanks to the evolving nature of the internet. Firefox developers are always eager to find and resolve these security issues as quickly as possible to ensure our users stay safe. We do this continuously by shipping new mitigations like win32k lockdown, site isolation, investing in security fuzzing, and promoting bug bounties for similar escapes. In the interest of openness and transparency, we also continuously invite and reward security researchers who share their newest attacks, which helps us keep our product safe even when there isn’t a Pwn2Own to participate in.

The post Version 2.9 of the Mozilla Root Store Policy appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
With each update to the Mozilla Root Store Policy (MRSP), we aim to address emerging challenges and enhance the integrity and reliability of our root store. Version 2.9 introduces several noteworthy changes and refinements, and within this blog post we provide an overview of key updates to the MRSP and their implications for the broader online community.
Managing the Effective Lifetimes of Root CA Certificates
One of the most crucial changes in this version of the MRSP is to limit the time that a root certificate may be in our root store. Often, a root certificate will be issued with a validity period of 25 or more years, but that is too long when one considers the rapid advances in computer processing strength. To address this concern and to make the web PKI more agile, we are implementing a schedule to remove trust bits and/or the root certificates themselves from our root store after they have been in use for more than a specified number of years.
Under the new section 7.4 of the MRSP, root certificates that are enabled with the website’s trust bit will have that bit removed when CA key material is 15 years old. Similarly, root certificates with the email trust bit will have a “Distrust for S/MIME After Date” set at 18 years from the CA’s key material generation date. A transition schedule has been established here, which phases this in for CA root certificates created before April 14, 2014. The transition schedule is subject to change if underlying algorithms become more susceptible to cryptanalytic attack or if other circumstances arise that make the schedule obsolete.
Compliance with CA/Browser Forum’s Baseline Requirements for S/MIME Certificates
The CA/Browser Forum released Baseline Requirements for S/MIME certificates (S/MIME BRs), with an effective date of September 1, 2023. Therefore, as of September 1, 2023, certificates issued for digitally signing or encrypting email messages must conform to the latest version of the S/MIME BRs, as stated in section 2.3 of the MRSP. Period-of-time audits to confirm compliance with the S/MIME BRs will be required for audit periods ending after October 30, 2023. Transition guidance is provided at the following wiki page: https://wiki.mozilla.org/CA/Transition_SMIME_BRs.
Security Incident and Vulnerability Disclosure
To enable swift response and resolution of security concerns impacting CAs, guidance for reporting security incidents and serious vulnerabilities has been added to section 2.4 of the MRSP. Additional guidance is provided in the following wiki page: https://wiki.mozilla.org/CA/Vulnerability_Disclosure.
CCADB Compliance Self-Assessment
Previously, CAs were required to perform an annual self-assessment of compliance with Mozilla’s policies and the CA/Browser Forum’s Baseline Requirements for TLS, but the MRSP did not specifically require that the annual self-assessment be submitted. Beginning in January 2024, CA operators with root certificates enabled with the website’s trust bit must perform and submit the CCADB Compliance Self-Assessment annually (within 92 calendar days from the close of their audit period). This will provide transparency into each CA’s ongoing compliance with Mozilla policies and the CA/Browser Forum’s Baseline Requirements for TLS.
Elimination of SHA-1
With the release of Firefox 52 in 2017, Mozilla removed support for SHA-1 in TLS certificates. Version 2.9 of the MRSP takes further steps to eliminate the use of SHA-1, allowing it only for end entity certificates that are completely outside the scope of the MRSP, and for specific, limited circumstances involving duplication of an existing SHA-1 intermediate CA certificate. These efforts align with industry best practices to phase out the usage of SHA-1.
Conclusion
Several of these changes will require that CAs revise their practices, so we have sent CAs a CA Communication and Survey to alert them about these changes and to inquire about their ability to comply with the new requirements by the effective dates.
These updates to the MRSP underscore Mozilla’s unwavering commitment to provide our users with a secure and trustworthy experience. We encourage your participation in the Mozilla community and the CCADB community to contribute to these efforts to provide a secure online experience for our users.

The post Upgrading Mozilla’s Root Store Policy to Version 2.8 appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
These changes will provide Mozilla with more complete information about CA practices and certificate status. Several of these changes will require that CAs revise their practices, so we have also sent CAs a CA Communication and Survey to alert them about these changes and to inquire about their ability to comply with the new requirements by the effective dates.
In summary, these updates to the MRSP will improve the quality of information about CA operations and the certificates that they issue, which will increase security in the ecosystem by further enabling Firefox to keep your information private and secure.

The post Revocation Reason Codes for TLS Server Certificates appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
Significant improvements have already been made in the web PKI, including the following changes to Mozilla’s Root Store Policy and the CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements (BRs), which reduced risks associated with exposure of the private keys of TLS certificates by reducing the amount of time that the exposure can exist.
Under those provisions, the maximum validity period and maximum re-use of domain validation for TLS certificates roughly corresponds to the typical period of time for owning a domain name; i.e. one year. This reduces the risk of potential exposure of the private key of each TLS certificate that is revoked, replaced, or no longer needed by the original certificate subscriber.
In version 2.8 of Mozilla’s Root Store Policy we added requirements stating that:
These new requirements will provide a complete accounting of all revoked TLS server certificates. This will enable Firefox to pre-load more complete certificate revocation data, eliminating the need for it to query CAs for revocation information when establishing TLS connections.
The new requirements about revocation reason codes account for the situations that can happen at any time during the certificate’s validity period, and address the following problems:
Section 6.1.1 of version 2.8 of Mozilla’s Root Store Policy states that when a TLS server certificate is revoked for one of the following reasons the corresponding entry in the CRL must include the revocation reason code:
RFC 5280 Reason Codes that are not listed above shall not be specified in the CRL for TLS server certificates, for reasons explained in the wiki page.
These new requirements are important steps towards improving the security of the web PKI, and are part of our effort to resolve long-existing problems with revocation of TLS server certificates. The requirements about revocation reason codes will enable Firefox to depend on revocation reason codes being used consistently, so they can be relied on when verifying the validity of certificates during TLS connections. The requirement that CA operators provide their full CRL URLs in the CCADB will enable Firefox to pre-load more complete certificate revocation data, eliminating dependency on the infrastructure of CAs during the certificate verification part of establishing TLS connections. The combination of these two new sets of requirements will further enable Firefox to enforce revocation checking of TLS server certificates, which makes TLS connections even more secure.

The post Preventing secrets from leaking through Clipboard appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
For decades users have been pressing Ctrl+C or relying on copy buttons. All these tricks and shortcuts to speed up text processing have become natural and intuitive to us. We do not pay attention to what is happening to copied information besides the fact that we can paste it. It’s safe to assume that most of us consider the clipboard as temporary data sharing. Once you copy something previous data in the clipboard will be overwritten. People rely on this assumption when they copy sensitive information such as passwords.
Pressing Ctrl+C in Windows 10 no longer does only what it was doing in Windows 3.0. Windows can now also preserve copied data in Clipboard History and sync it across devices. This may be very handy when you need to transfer information from one device to another.
The temporary effect of Ctrl+C is no longer temporary. For example, a password can stay unnoticed in local history forever.
The local effect of Ctrl+C is no longer local. For example, recovery codes copied last week on one device can appear in the clipboard of another PC for the same user.
In Windows 10 it is now possible to look up secrets from connected devices by pressing Windows+V on the unlocked system. There will be no audit trails and no authentication challenge. How many of us lock their system every time we go to get a cup of coffee?
Starting with Firefox 94 and ESR 91.3, your browser keeps the temporary and local promise of clipboard in certain places where users expect privacy, and will not share that data with either Clipboard History or Cloud Clipboard. This protects users when they copy passwords and usernames from the Passwords page, and will protect everything people copy to the clipboard from a Private Browsing window.
We do this by using appropriate clipboard formats for sensitive data. The corresponding CVE can be found at https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2021-38505.
Technology makes our lives better every day, but it also introduces new risks. Risks that most people are not aware of. Firefox strives to keep everyone safe and this is one step in that direction.

The post Improving the Quality of Publicly Trusted Intermediate CA Certificates with Enhanced Oversight and Automation appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
In version 2.7.1 of the MRSP, we clarified that all unconstrained intermediate certificates, including those that share the same key pair, must be disclosed in the CCADB, whether they are self-signed, doppelgänger, reissued, cross-signed, or other types (MRSP § 5.3). Currently, “technically constrained” intermediate certificates are not necessarily reported, but in version 2.8 of the MRSP we will begin to also require disclosure of intermediate certificates that are capable of issuing websites (TLS/SSL) or email (S/MIME) certificates even when they are technically constrained. According to MRSP § 5.3.1, technical constraints are determined by a combination of the trust bits recognized by Mozilla for the root CA certificate (websites and/or email trust bits) and the Extended Key Usage (EKU) and Name Constraints X.509v3 (with constraints on dNSName, iPAddress, DirectoryName, rfc822Name in permittedSubtrees) extensions in the intermediate certificate. For example, an intermediate certificate that contains the id-kp-serverAuth extended key usage in its EKU and is name-constrained according to section 7.1.5 of the Baseline Requirements (BRs) will be required (as of MRSP version 2.8) to be disclosed in the CCADB.
We are also updating MRSP § 8 to formalize requirements and procedures for CAs to follow when they plan to issue an unconstrained intermediate certificate to an external third party. For example, when a Root CA in Mozilla’s program cross-signs a new CA they are essentially bypassing Mozilla’s root inclusion process, so the Root CA needs to take responsibility for the new CA and the Root CA needs to perform due diligence on the new CA before issuing the cross-signed certificate. The operator of a Mozilla-trusted Root CA is at all times completely and ultimately accountable for every certificate signed under the Root CA, whether directly or through subordinate CAs or cross-certified CAs. For more details, we refer you to our Process for Review and Approval of Externally Operated Subordinate CAs that are not Technically Constrained.
With the CCADB, Mozilla has provided a variety of tools to examine the status of intermediate certificates where none existed before. These include improvements that allow us to automatically process CA audit reports using Audit Letter Validation (ALV), advise CAs on the status of their intermediate certificates, and provide CAs and root store operators with lists of tasks relevant to intermediate certificates listed in the CCADB.
Automated Audit Letter Validation (ALV) is an automated process that parses and validates the information in CA audit reports, and it is now used to verify that intermediate CAs are properly audited (CA/Audit Statements:#ALV) according to their technical capabilities; such as issuing certificates for email (S/MIME), websites (TLS/SSL), and EV TLS. For example, a certificate that is technically capable of issuing certificates that can be recognized for EV TLS must have a current EV audit statement that lists the intermediate CA certificate as having been in scope of the EV audit.
Task Lists on home pages in the CCADB alert CAs about certificates whose audit statements need to be renewed and to problems such as unaudited intermediate certificates. These task lists help minimize the prompting and reminding that would otherwise be required of root program managers.
Image 1: CCADB lists CA tasks involving intermediate certificates
The CCADB also generates task lists for root program managers so that we can be aware of items needing our attention.
Image 2: CCADB lists tasks for managers of Mozilla’s root store program
Updating the Mozilla Root Store Policy and adding automation to the CCADB demonstrate Mozilla’s commitment to continue to advance the security and privacy of individuals on the internet. The recent and in-progress updates to the MRSP and the CCADB improve oversight of the issuance and management of intermediate certificates, which play a critical part in the web PKI by directly signing server certificates for TLS/SSL. These updates to policy and automation enable us to proactively identify and resolve problems with the approximately 3,000 intermediate certificates that can issue certificates that are recognized as valid by NSS and Firefox.

The post Securing the proxy API for Firefox add-ons appeared first on Mozilla Security Blog.
In early June, we discovered add-ons that were misusing the proxy API, which is used by add-ons to control how Firefox connects to the internet. These add-ons interfered with Firefox in a way that prevented users who had installed them from downloading updates, accessing updated blocklists, and updating remotely configured content.
In total these add-ons were installed by 455k users.
This post outlines the steps we have taken to mitigate this issue as well as provide details of what users should do to check if they are affected. Developers of add-ons that use the proxy API will find some specific instructions below that are required for future submissions.
The malicious add-ons were blocked, to prevent installation by other users.
To prevent additional users from being impacted by new add-on submissions misusing the proxy API, we paused on approvals for add-ons that used the proxy API until fixes were available for all users.
Starting with Firefox 91.1, Firefox now includes changes to fall back to direct connections when Firefox makes an important request (such as those for updates) via a proxy configuration that fails. Ensuring these requests are completed successfully helps us deliver the latest important updates and protections to our users. We also deployed a system add-on named “Proxy Failover” (ID: proxy-failover@mozilla.com) with additional mitigations that has been shipped to both current and older Firefox versions.
It is always a good idea to keep Firefox up to date, and if you’re using Windows to make sure Microsoft Defender is running. Together, Firefox 93 and Defender will make sure you’re protected from this issue.
First, check what version of Firefox you are running. Assuming you have not disabled updates specifically, you should be running at minimum the latest release version, which is Firefox 93 as of today (or Firefox ESR 91.2). If you are not running the latest version, and have not disabled updates, you might want to check if you are affected by this issue. First, try updating Firefox. Recent versions of Firefox come with an updated blocklist that automatically disables the malicious add-ons. If that doesn’t work, there are a few ways to fix this:
Note: The following only applies to add-ons that require the use of the proxy API.
We are asking all developers requiring the proxy API to start including a strict_min_version key in their manifest.json files targeting “91.1” or above as shown in this example:
“browser_specific_settings”: {
“gecko”: {
“strict_min_version”: “91.1”
}
}
Setting this explicitly will help us to expedite review for your add-on; thank you in advance for helping us to keep Firefox users secure.
We take user security very seriously at Mozilla. Our add-on submission process includes automated and manual reviews that we continue to evolve and improve in order to protect Firefox users.
If you uncover a security vulnerability, please report it via our bug bounty program.
